Jack Ma Backed OceanBase Seeks Up to $443 Million to Accelerate AI Expansion

OceanBase, the database software company backed by Jack Ma and spun out from Ant Group, is seeking to raise between 2 billion and 3 billion yuan (up to $443 million) to strengthen its artificial intelligence capabilities and support its expansion as an independent enterprise software provider. According to Bloomberg and Yahoo Finance, the fundraising will help finance the development of AI native database services, expand research and development and accelerate the company’s international growth strategy as demand for AI infrastructure continues to surge.

OceanBase was originally developed within Ant Group to handle massive transaction volumes for Alibaba’s digital payments ecosystem before being established as an independent company. The proposed funding round comes amid intensifying global competition in AI infrastructure, with enterprises increasingly seeking database platforms capable of supporting large language models and advanced AI applications. The company has been expanding beyond China, targeting financial institutions, telecommunications companies and public sector organisations across Asia and other international markets.

The fundraising underscores how AI is reshaping the enterprise software industry, with database providers investing heavily to integrate artificial intelligence into core data management platforms. For businesses and investors, OceanBase’s capital raise reflects growing confidence in AI infrastructure as organisations modernise their technology stacks to support intelligent applications, cloud computing and data intensive workloads. It also highlights the continued momentum in China’s AI ecosystem despite heightened global competition.

Looking ahead, the success of the fundraising will strengthen OceanBase’s ability to compete with established global database providers while accelerating innovation in AI powered data services. As enterprises increase spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure, the company’s expansion could reinforce China’s position in the rapidly evolving global AI software market.
