Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reaffirmed the importance of women supporting one another to accelerate national development during a meeting with the President Elect of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN. According to ChannelsTv and TheCable, the meeting focused on strengthening female leadership, promoting justice and expanding opportunities for women across professional and public institutions. The visit comes shortly after Badejo-Okusanya made history as the first woman to be directly elected President of the Nigerian Bar Association and the second woman to lead the association.
During the meeting, Senator Tinubu emphasised that women have a shared responsibility to mentor, uplift and create opportunities for one another, describing collaboration as a catalyst for national progress. “Women supporting women will accelerate growth,” she said, while congratulating Badejo-Okusanya on her landmark election and expressing confidence in her ability to advance the legal profession. Badejo-Okusanya thanked the First Lady for the encouragement and reaffirmed her commitment to promoting the rule of law, strengthening the legal profession and expanding access to justice.
The engagement highlights the growing momentum behind women’s leadership in Nigeria’s professional institutions and reflects broader efforts to promote gender inclusion in governance and decision making. For businesses, policymakers and investors, stronger female representation in leadership is increasingly recognised as a driver of better governance, institutional resilience and sustainable economic growth. The meeting also reinforces ongoing collaboration between government and professional bodies in supporting inclusive national development.
Looking ahead, the emergence of Badejo-Okusanya as NBA President is expected to inspire greater female participation in leadership across the legal profession and other sectors. As Nigeria continues to advance policies that encourage inclusion and institutional reform, partnerships between government, professional associations and the private sector are likely to play a vital role in strengthening governance and expanding opportunities for women nationwide.
