Adesuwa Okunbo Rhodes is a Nigerian economist, private equity investor, and entrepreneur who has become one of Africa’s most influential investment leaders. As the Founder and Managing Partner of Aruwa Capital Management, she has pioneered gender-lens investing across West Africa, championing businesses that deliver both strong financial returns and measurable social impact. Through her leadership, she has helped reshape conversations around inclusive investing, proving that commercial success and societal transformation can go hand in hand.

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Adesuwa studied Economics at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom before launching a career in global investment banking. She began her professional journey at Lehman Brothers and later joined J.P. Morgan, where she worked within the Mergers & Acquisitions and Leveraged Finance teams, contributing to transactions worth more than $5.6 billion across emerging and developed markets. She subsequently joined TLG Capital before co-founding Syntaxis Capital Africa, where she served as Managing Partner and led more than $200 million in growth capital investments across Sub-Saharan Africa, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises with high-growth potential.
In 2019, at just 29 years old, Adesuwa founded Aruwa Capital Management, becoming one of the youngest female private equity fund managers on the continent. The firm was established to bridge Africa’s financing gap by investing in high-growth businesses, particularly those founded by women or serving women and underserved communities. Under her leadership, Aruwa has grown into one of Africa’s most respected women-led private equity firms, investing across healthcare, manufacturing, financial inclusion, renewable energy, agriculture, and consumer sectors. She also made history as the only female General Partner in Nigeria to raise more than $10 million for a first institutional private equity fund, a milestone that has inspired women across Africa’s investment ecosystem.

Adesuwa’s influence extends well beyond capital allocation. She has become a leading advocate for impact investing and women’s economic empowerment, frequently speaking at global forums including the Africa CEO Forum, where she champions policies that unlock investment opportunities for African entrepreneurs. She currently serves on several corporate boards across healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture, hospitality, and renewable energy, contributing strategic leadership to businesses driving economic development across the continent.
Her work has earned widespread international recognition. In 2023, she received the prestigious 2X Global Woman Fund Manager of the Year Award and was recognized among the 150 EKO Aspire Women by the Lagos State Government for her contribution to gender equity and nation-building. She has been listed in the Institute Choiseul Top 100 African Leaders Under 40 for multiple consecutive years, named among Black Women in Asset Management’s Top 40, recognized by ImpactAlpha as an Agent of Impact, featured among NBC Washington’s Top 35 Women Moving Africa Forward, and selected by Meaningful Business and EY as one of the Top 100 global leaders combining profit and purpose. She has also been recognized by Leading Ladies Africa, BusinessDay, and Empower Africa as one of the continent’s most inspiring women in business and finance.

More recently, Aruwa Capital has continued to strengthen its position as one of Africa’s leading impact investment firms. The company has expanded its assets under management, attracted backing from leading global institutional investors, and continued deploying capital into businesses that create jobs, strengthen local industries, and improve access to essential goods and services. Adesuwa remains a vocal advocate for investing in Africa’s informal economy and women-led enterprises, describing them as some of the continent’s greatest untapped economic opportunities.
Today, Adesuwa Okunbo Rhodes stands among Africa’s most respected financial leaders. Through Aruwa Capital Management, she has demonstrated that investment can be a catalyst for inclusive growth, sustainable development, and long-term prosperity. Her journey from global investment banking to building one of Africa’s most influential private equity firms continues to inspire a new generation of entrepreneurs, investors, and changemakers committed to shaping the continent’s economic future.
