Ethiopian Airlines orders six additional Boeing 787-9 jets to expand long-haul network

Ethiopian Airlines has confirmed the purchase of six additional Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, reinforcing its long-haul expansion strategy as global travel demand continues to recover. The deal, announced in April 2026, converts existing purchase options into firm orders, further strengthening the airline’s wide-body fleet, as reported by Reuters.

The latest order builds on a broader fleet modernization plan, bringing Ethiopian Airlines’ total orders for the 787 family to 26 aircraft. Deliveries for the newly confirmed jets are expected to begin in 2028, positioning the airline to scale operations across intercontinental routes, including underserved markets such as Australia that require longer-range aircraft.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is widely regarded for its fuel efficiency and long-range capability, typically carrying around 290 passengers over distances exceeding 7,500 nautical miles. These features make it a key asset for airlines seeking to expand global connectivity while managing operating costs.

Chief Executive Mesfin Tasew said the additional aircraft will help address capacity constraints and support the airline’s ambition to strengthen its global network. The expansion also aligns with the carrier’s broader infrastructure plans, including a proposed $12.5 billion mega airport project aimed at positioning Addis Ababa as a major global aviation hub.

The order underscores Ethiopian Airlines’ continued leadership in African aviation and reflects a wider trend of airlines investing in fuel-efficient aircraft to meet rising demand. As competition intensifies across long-haul routes, the move positions the airline to maintain its dominance while enhancing Africa’s connectivity to global markets.
