Amazon advances $9bn Globalstar acquisition talks to strengthen satellite strategy

Amazon is closing in on a potential acquisition of satellite communications firm Globalstar, in a deal that could significantly expand its presence in the fast-growing space-based connectivity market. The discussions, first reported by Bloomberg News and cited by Reuters, indicate that an agreement could be reached as early as mid-April 2026, although negotiations are still ongoing.

The proposed transaction, estimated at around $9 billion, would give Amazon access to Globalstar’s satellite network, which provides voice, data, and asset-tracking services. The move is expected to complement Amazon’s broader ambitions in low-Earth orbit connectivity, positioning it more competitively against rivals such as SpaceX’s Starlink in delivering global broadband infrastructure.

However, the deal structure remains complex, partly due to existing partnerships and shareholdings, including Apple’s significant stake in Globalstar and its reliance on the company’s satellite capacity for iPhone emergency services. These factors could influence final terms and timing, as multiple stakeholders assess the strategic implications.

If finalised, the acquisition would mark a major escalation in the global satellite race, underscoring how leading technology firms are investing aggressively in space infrastructure to secure future communications dominance. The move highlights a broader shift toward integrated, space-driven connectivity ecosystems that are set to redefine global telecommunications and digital access.
