Zimbabwe Completes Lithium-Ion Battery Trial with Zero Failures, Eyes Industrial Expansion

Zimbabwe has concluded a year-long trial of its locally developed lithium-ion batteries with no reported failures, according to officials from Verify Engineering, the state-owned firm leading the project. The performance milestone marks a key step in the country’s efforts to drive domestic value addition in the energy storage sector.

The batteries, developed at Verify Engineering’s facility in Mutare, have been confirmed to meet international standards for durability and quality. According to company representatives, the successful outcome now paves the way for commercial-scale production. The pilot phase was financed with approximately US$500,000 in seed funding, while the company is currently seeking an estimated US$28 million to establish a full-scale manufacturing plant.

The initiative aligns with Zimbabwe’s broader policy framework to increase domestic beneficiation of strategic minerals. As part of this strategy, the government has already banned the export of raw lithium ore and plans to extend restrictions to lithium concentrates by 2027, according to statements by the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development.

Zimbabwe hosts the largest known lithium reserves in Africa and is seeking to capitalize on global demand for energy storage technologies. The development of local battery production capabilities is expected to boost industrial output, support job creation, and reduce dependence on imported systems.

The zero-failure trial result reinforces Zimbabwe’s ambition to become a regional hub for green energy manufacturing and supply. Industry analysts note that with sustained investment and policy continuity, the country could position itself competitively within the global battery value chain.
