Nigeria–US Security Partnership Focuses on Capacity and Intelligence Sharing – DHQ

Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has clarified that its security cooperation with the United States is centred on capacity building, military education, intelligence sharing, logistics support, and strategic dialogue to tackle shared threats such as terrorism and transnational crime. The military emphasized that the partnership operates under structured bilateral frameworks and with full respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty, The Cable reported.

In a statement signed by Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, the DHQ responded to speculation about a U.S. troop presence in Nigeria, stressing that all engagements are policy-driven, transparent, and aligned with constitutional provisions governing international military cooperation, The Will News noted.

The statement highlighted recent high-level meetings between Nigerian officials and their U.S. counterparts at the Office of the National Security Adviser. These discussions focused on strengthening coordination, enhancing accountability, and improving operational cooperation in counterterrorism and other security efforts, while prioritising the protection of civilians, Authority NG reported.

DHQ reiterated that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain committed to safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity while engaging credible partners to enhance security capabilities without compromising national independence. The clarification comes amid broader regional and bilateral security initiatives designed to address evolving threats in West Africa, The Cable added.
