Madagascar’s Military-Led Government Appoints Mostly Civilian Cabinet

Madagascar’s new military-led administration has announced a cabinet composed largely of civilian ministers in what appears to be an effort to project legitimacy and stability following the recent military takeover.

Interim President Michael Randrianirina, who assumed power earlier this month, said a transitional committee led by the military would work alongside the civilian government for up to two years before national elections are held, as reported by Africanews. The new cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo, includes 25 civilian ministers and four members from the military or paramilitary ranks, according to Polity.org.za.

Key appointments include Christine Razanamahasoa as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fanirisoa Ernaivo, a long-standing opponent of the ousted president, as Minister of Justice, and economics professor Hery Ramiarison as Minister of Finance. These selections are seen as part of the government’s attempt to foster inclusivity and calm domestic tensions, Reuters noted.

Observers say the inclusion of prominent civilian figures, while the military retains control of strategic ministries such as defense and national security, signals an effort by the junta to balance governance and maintain international credibility during the transition, as highlighted by Africanews.
