Canadian mining giant Ivanhoe Mines has begun heating its 500,000-tonnes-per-annum direct-to-blister copper smelter at the Kamoa-Kakula Copper Complex in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the company confirmed in a statement. The milestone marks a significant step in boosting the DRC’s copper production capacity and solidifying its position as a key player in the global copper market.
According to Business Insider Africa, the smelter is designed to efficiently process copper concentrates into high-quality blister copper while minimizing environmental impact. The facility is expected to create substantial employment opportunities and stimulate economic activity in the region.
Industry analysts note that this development could attract additional investment in Congo’s mining sector and strengthen downstream processing capabilities, contributing to broader economic diversification and industrialization goals, as highlighted by the company’s release.
