Guinea-Bissau Holds Presidential Vote with Embaló in Tight Race for Second Term

The West African nation of Guinea‑Bissau went to the polls on Sunday, 23 November 2025, for both presidential and legislative elections, with incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embaló vying for a rare consecutive second term amid mounting challenges. According to Reuters, Embaló faces stiff competition from 11 challengers, including Fernando Dias da Costa, a newcomer backed by forces aligned with the formerly dominant African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), which was barred from fielding candidates after missing a deadline.

Preliminary reports showed voter turnout exceeding 65 percent, with the national electoral commission expecting to announce provisional results by Thursday. Reuters said that if no candidate secures more than 50 percent, a runoff is required. Embaló, citing his commitment to stability and development, urged citizens to “vote massively” in Gabu, the eastern city where he cast his ballot.

Analysts noted the heavily polarised atmosphere ahead of the vote. Embaló’s government has faced accusations of weakening democratic institutions and obstructing opposition activity, while Dias has criticised the president’s handling of the country’s booming drug-trafficking trade and persistent political instability. The Reuters report highlighted that Guinea-Bissau has experienced at least nine coups or attempted coups since independence.

This election marks a pivotal moment for Guinea-Bissau, where competing expectations for continued stability and the restoration of institutional norms will heavily influence political trajectories in the years ahead.
