EU Launches €12 Million Initiative to Boost Maritime Security in West and Central Africa

The European Union has announced a €12 million program aimed at strengthening maritime security across West and Central Africa, according to nairametrics. The initiative seeks to enhance regional cooperation, improve monitoring capabilities, and combat illicit activities such as piracy, illegal fishing, and trafficking.

The program will fund advanced surveillance systems, training for coast guard personnel, and joint exercises among participating countries. According to the EU’s External Action Service, the initiative is part of a broader strategy to support stability and sustainable economic growth in the region.

Local authorities in West and Central Africa have welcomed the initiative, noting that enhanced maritime security is critical for protecting trade routes and supporting the fisheries sector, which sustains millions of livelihoods. Experts cited by Reuters highlight that the program could serve as a model for similar partnerships in other parts of Africa.
