Ethiopia’s Fotyen Tesfay Sets Second-Fastest Women’s Marathon Time on Debut

Ethiopian long-distance runner Fotyen Tesfay delivered a historic performance on her marathon debut, clocking 2:10:53 to record the second-fastest women’s marathon time in history, a result reported by Reuters.

The remarkable run came at the Barcelona Marathon, where Tesfay maintained an aggressive pace through much of the race and came close to challenging the world record before slowing slightly in the closing kilometres. Her finishing time places her just behind the current world record of 2:09:56, marking one of the most impressive marathon debuts ever recorded in women’s athletics, according to El Pais.

Tesfay, who previously built her reputation as a standout performer in shorter road races and track events, had already shown elite potential with world-class performances in the half marathon and long-distance track disciplines. Her transition to the marathon with such a strong debut signals the emergence of another formidable force in Ethiopia’s long tradition of world-class distance running.

Athletics analysts say the performance positions Tesfay among the leading contenders in global marathon racing and highlights Ethiopia’s continuing dominance in elite long-distance running, particularly in women’s road racing.
