Egypt and Cyprus have signed a framework agreement on natural gas cooperation, marking a strategic step toward strengthening energy ties and unlocking new supply opportunities in the Eastern Mediterranean, according to Reuters.
The agreement provides a foundation for future deals covering gas exploration, development, and trade, with particular focus on Cyprus’ offshore fields, including the Kronos and Aphrodite assets. It also opens the door for Cypriot gas to be processed through Egypt’s existing infrastructure.
Officials say the partnership could see gas from Cyprus transported to Egypt for liquefaction and export, positioning both countries to better serve European markets at a time of heightened demand for alternative energy sources.
With production from key fields expected later this decade, analysts view the deal as a long-term play to establish the region as a major gas hub, while reinforcing cooperation between regional players navigating shifting global energy dynamics.
