Chef Fregz : Nigeria’s Culinary Maestro of Modern Elegance

In the ever-evolving world of fine dining, Gbubemi Fregene, widely known as Chef Fregz, has carved a space where tradition meets tasteful reinvention. Trained in the classical techniques of French cuisine yet deeply rooted in Nigerian flavor profiles, Chef Fregz is not merely a chef, he is an artist of the palate and a trailblazer in Africa’s contemporary culinary scene.

Born in Abeokuta and raised in Benin City, Fregene’s passion for the kitchen began early. However, it wasn’t until he completed a degree in Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management at Covenant University that his culinary path truly took shape.

In pursuit of refinement, he relocated to Paris to study at the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Institute, an experience that broadened his technique and deepened his commitment to excellence.

Returning to Nigeria in 2009, Chef Fregz launched DVARD Catering Service, a creative platform offering bespoke culinary services. His reputation for reimagining local dishes with a gourmet twist quickly attracted elite clientele and tastemakers looking for something bold, modern, and rooted in Nigerian identity. Through his now-iconic “Chef Fregz Special” pop-up events, he cultivated a new culinary culture, infusing youth, flair, and innovation into every plate.

Chef Fregz is also widely recognized for his role as a judge on the celebrated cooking competition, Knorr Taste Quest, where he mentored aspiring chefs and encouraged a new wave of kitchen confidence across West Africa. With a strong digital presence and brand collaborations under his belt, he has become an ambassador of Nigerian cuisine to the world, representing the country at global food showcases, including the Dubai Food Festival.

Yet behind the apron, Fregene’s lifestyle speaks of artistry beyond the plate. In 2018, he married Nigerian actress and producer Kemi ‘Lala’ Akindoju, and together they’ve become a creative powerhouse, bridging food, film, and storytelling. The couple welcomed their first child in 2021, bringing new inspiration into his journey.

At the heart of Chef Fregz’s philosophy is a belief in the emotional and cultural depth of food. His dishes are more than nourishment, they are expressions of heritage, refined through technique and served with elegance. For those who seek a taste of Africa redefined, his work represents the apex of modern Nigerian dining.

With every dish plated and every event curated, Chef Fregz invites the world to take a seat at Nigeria’s most refined table, where flavor meets finesse, and tradition is always en vogue.
