Benin City has been awarded $1 million after emerging as one of the top cities in the Bloomberg Mayors Challenge, a global competition recognizing cities that develop innovative solutions to urban challenges. The award places Benin City among a select group of leading cities worldwide celebrated for transformative public service ideas, particularly in healthcare delivery, according to reporting by BusinessDay.
The competition attracted over 600 cities, with only 25 finalists across 20 countries, including four African cities, making the cut. Benin City’s selection underscores its growing reputation for forward-thinking governance and practical solutions to local urban challenges.
Governor Monday Okpebholo described the recognition as a testament to the state government’s commitment to innovation and improving public service delivery. He noted that the award demonstrates that ideas developed locally can compete globally while delivering meaningful impact for residents.
The Bloomberg Mayors Challenge, supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies, provides funding and technical support to help cities implement solutions that improve governance, enhance public services, and elevate quality of life. Pulse Nigeria says the recognition positions Benin City as a model for urban innovation in Nigeria and could attract international partnerships to further its development agenda.
