At this year’s Entertainment Week Africa, Bankulli the artist, talent manager, and cultural curator we all know and respect hosted an exclusive first look at his upcoming documentary series Chronicles of Afrobeats. And honestly, it was one of the weekend’s highlights.
The screening featured an abridged cut of Episode One, “The Sound,” and it took everyone on a journey through the roots of Afrobeats. From Fuji and Highlife to Juju, Afrobeat, ’80s electronic influences, and the reggae/dancehall vibes of the ’90s it was a vivid reminder of how many layers and stories sit beneath the sound we celebrate today.
Bankulli didn’t just show history; he told it with heart.

The episode wove together rare archival clips, nostalgic moments, and thoughtful commentary, bringing the evolution of Afrobeats to life in a fresh, emotional way.
And the lineup of voices featured? Incredible.
Viewers heard reflections from Don Jazzy, ID Cabassa, Zlatan Ibile, Mayorkun, KK Ogungbe, Tiwa Savage, Femi Kuti, Seun Kuti, and several others who’ve helped shape the genre’s global rise.
A few standout moments from the event:
- A special screening of the first episode
- The official premiere of the trailer
- A post-screening conversation with Bankulli about the past, present, and future of Afrobeats.

The room was filled with industry shapers artists, producers, execs, and investors all celebrating a project that preserves and honors our creative legacy.
Chronicles of Afrobeats is more than a documentary; it’s a love letter to the sound, the pioneers, and the culture. And for everyone who’s been part of pushing African music forward, this project carries the same spirit: bold, intentional, and rooted in storytelling that matters.
