Othman Benjelloun stands as one of Africa’s most respected figures in banking and business, celebrated for his strategic vision, entrepreneurial leadership, and contributions to economic development across the continent. As Chairman and CEO of the Bank of Africa Group, he has transformed one of Africa’s leading banking networks while fostering institutions that support inclusive growth and regional integration.
Born in 1932 in Fez, Morocco, Benjelloun studied at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland, earning a foundation that would inform his analytical and strategic approach to business. Returning to Morocco, he joined his family business and gradually expanded into banking, insurance, and telecommunications, sectors where he would leave a lasting mark.
Benjelloun’s most notable achievement is his leadership of the Bank of Africa. Following its privatisation in 1995, he guided the institution into a pan-African banking powerhouse with operations across more than twenty countries. Under his stewardship, the bank has strengthened regional trade, supported cross-border investment, and extended financial services to communities across West, Central, and East Africa.
Beyond banking, he oversees FinanceCom Holding, a diversified conglomerate with interests in insurance, telecommunications, media, and industrial services. Through this platform, he developed RMA Watanya, a leading insurance group, and maintains strategic telecom investments, reinforcing his reputation for building sustainable, growth-oriented enterprises.
Benjelloun has held prominent industry leadership roles, including as Chairman of the Professional Association of Moroccan Banks and previously of the Union of North African Banks. He has also advised the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, contributing expertise to global finance and economic development initiatives.
His work has been widely recognised. He has received national and international honours, including Morocco’s Order of the Throne, France’s Order of Arts and Letters, and distinctions from Spain, Senegal, and Djibouti. He serves as Chancellor of Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane and founded the BMCE Bank Foundation, supporting education and environmental initiatives in Morocco and across Africa.
Othman Benjelloun’s career reflects a rare combination of entrepreneurial ambition and social responsibility. By building robust financial institutions, expanding diversified business ventures, and investing in community development, he has cemented his legacy as a pioneer in African finance. His vision continues to shape not only the banking sector but also the economic landscape of the continent, demonstrating how leadership, strategy, and purpose can drive transformative change.
