Nigerians Report Sudden U.S. Visa Revocations, Embassy Cites Security Provision

A growing number of Nigerian citizens holding valid U.S. visas are facing abrupt cancellations, with the U.S. Embassy in Abuja citing new information under Title 22 CFR Section 41.122, which grants authorities discretion to revoke visas at any time. Travelers report that the annulments often come without prior notice, disrupting travel plans, education, and professional commitments. Premium Times has highlighted concerns raised by immigration lawyers, who argue that the opaque process risks eroding trust between applicants and the embassy.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) recently warned citizens to exercise caution, emphasizing that the U.S. continues to conduct post-issuance monitoring of visa holders. Officials stressed that breaches of conditions, such as overstays or engaging in unauthorized activities, heighten the risk of cancellation. As Guardian Nigeria reported, authorities urged Nigerians to ensure strict compliance with entry requirements to avoid penalties.

U.S. officials, for their part, have defended the practice, insisting that revocations are part of ongoing vetting to protect national security and immigration integrity. Reuters recently noted that Washington has broadened its screening process to allow revocation of visas even after entry, underlining that holding a visa does not guarantee admission.

The development has fueled uncertainty among students, business travelers, and professionals who rely on the U.S. for opportunities, as Nigeria’s lawmakers continue to press Washington to reconsider recent visa restrictions.
