Nathaniel Bassey Becomes First African Gospel Artist to Surpass One Billion YouTube Views

Nigerian gospel singer, songwriter and pastor Nathaniel Bassey has made history after his official YouTube channel surpassed one billion total views, making him the first African gospel artist to achieve the milestone. As of November 1, 2026, his channel, Nathaniel Bassey Main, had accumulated more than 1.014 billion views and approximately 5.24 million subscribers, according to statistics displayed on the platform and reported by Punch and Vanguard. Created in 2011, the channel’s growth reflects more than a decade of music releases, worship recordings and digital ministry that have attracted audiences across Africa and beyond.

A significant contributor to the milestone is the Hallelujah Challenge, the online prayer and worship initiative Bassey launched in 2017. The monthly programme, built around midnight sessions of praise, worship and prayer, has developed into a global Christian gathering, attracting participants from different countries through livestreams and recorded sessions. His widely recognised worship songs, including Imela, Onise Iyanu, Olowogbogboro and You Are God, have further strengthened his digital presence and expanded his reach among gospel music audiences. The October 2026 edition of the Hallelujah Challenge coincided with the announcement of the achievement, adding significance to the milestone for participants and followers of the initiative.

Beyond the numbers, Bassey’s achievement highlights the expanding influence of African gospel music through digital platforms and the growing capacity of faith-based creative communities to build international audiences. While several African mainstream music artists have surpassed one billion YouTube views across their channels, Bassey’s distinction is specifically within the gospel music category. He has consistently maintained that the Hallelujah Challenge is centred on worship and spiritual devotion rather than commercial returns. His latest milestone therefore represents both a significant digital achievement for his ministry and another marker of the global reach of Nigerian gospel music.
