Sultan Haitham bin Tarik of Oman paid a two day state visit to Botswana from September 16 to 17, where he was received by President Duma Boko in Gaborone for high-level talks aimed at expanding bilateral cooperation, according to Africanews and afrika.world. The visit marked an important milestone in relations between the two countries, which only established diplomatic ties in October 2025. The two leaders discussed opportunities to strengthen cooperation across mining and minerals, renewable energy, investment, logistics, food security, agriculture, health, tourism, trade and skills development.
The visit also produced a series of agreements intended to translate the growing diplomatic relationship into commercial partnerships. Nine bilateral agreements and instruments were signed, covering political consultations, investment promotion, air services, business cooperation and visa arrangements, alongside agreements on mining, energy security and pharmaceutical supply. Oman’s Minerals Development Oman and Botswana’s Exploration Investment Company also agreed terms for the co development of copper and gold mining opportunities, while an energy cooperation framework will explore sustainable energy development and regional energy integration.
The expanding relationship comes as Botswana seeks to diversify its economy beyond diamonds and attract investment into critical minerals, renewable energy and other productive sectors. Earlier cooperation between the two countries has already produced agreements covering mineral exploration, fuel storage and a planned 500 megawatt solar power project in Botswana. During the state visit, Sultan Haitham and President Boko also emphasised the importance of expanding joint investments and creating employment opportunities. The developments point to a rapidly developing Oman Botswana economic partnership, with both countries seeking to use their respective resources, investment capabilities and strategic positions to build broader commercial ties, according to Business Insider Africa.
