The Redeemed Christian Church of God has donated $265,854 to support the Federal Government’s ongoing evacuation of distressed Nigerians from South Africa amid renewed xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks, as reported by Sahara reporters and Voice of Nigeria. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the contribution, made under the leadership of Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, will finance the purchase of 500 one way tickets for Nigerians seeking to return home.
The Federal Government described the intervention as a significant demonstration of compassion and solidarity towards Nigerians facing insecurity and discrimination abroad. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also highlighted the donation as an example of how partnerships between faith based organisations and public institutions can strengthen humanitarian responses and provide practical support to citizens in distress.
The latest contribution comes as Nigeria’s evacuation operation, which began on June 10 following renewed attacks, continues to expand. The government said 1,640 Nigerians have so far been brought back from South Africa, with 1,385 sponsored directly by the Federal Government and 255 supported through philanthropic contributions. Another 202 Nigerians are currently awaiting final screening by South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs before they can return.
The intervention places faith based organisations alongside government institutions in responding to a growing diplomatic and humanitarian challenge. Beyond helping 500 Nigerians return safely, the RCCG’s contribution reinforces calls for stronger protection of Nigerians in the diaspora, while the Federal Government continues diplomatic engagement with South African authorities over recurring xenophobic and Afrophobic incidents.
