Sawiris Family Backs Swvl’s $14.5 Million U.S. Expansion Push

Egyptian mobility technology company Swvl has secured approximately $14.5 million in fresh private investment, backed in large part by the Sawiris family, as the Nasdaq listed company accelerates its expansion into the United States, according to Business Insider Africa and Billionaires.Africa. The funding combines an initial $13 million strategic investment round led by Houston based Coefficient LP, which is backed by the Sawiris family, with a subsequent $1.5 million investment from Cairo based Sofico Holdings.

Coefficient has committed $10 million of the initial round and is set to become Swvl’s largest institutional shareholder. Its founder and managing partner, Abdalla Ali, will also join Swvl’s board. Existing investors contributed another $3 million, while Sofico’s later investment expanded the total strategic round to $14.5 million.

Swvl plans to deploy the new capital toward expanding its U.S. operations, launching a lending product for transport operators and strengthening its balance sheet as it pursues multi year contracts with enterprises and governments. The company said its first quarter 2026 revenue rose 68% year on year to $8.2 million, while operating expenses fell to 23% of revenue.

The investment marks a significant vote of confidence in Swvl’s transformation from an Egyptian bus booking startup into a technology provider for enterprise and government transportation systems. With the United States now becoming its largest expansion opportunity, the Sawiris backed investment could give the company the capital and local relationships needed to compete in one of the world’s most developed mobility markets.
