Oil pares gains as U.S. signals partial reopening of Hormuz shipping route

Global oil prices eased after earlier gains as the United States said two merchant vessels had successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz, easing fears of a prolonged supply disruption in one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints. The development, announced in early May 2026, was seen as an initial step toward restoring commercial shipping through the route, as reported by Reuters and New York Post.

The U.S. military said the vessels were escorted safely through the waterway under a broader initiative to secure maritime traffic, helping to calm markets after a sharp surge in prices earlier in the week. Oil had previously jumped as much as 6% amid escalating attacks on ships and energy infrastructure in the region, highlighting the volatility tied to the الأزمة, as detailed by MarketWatch.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical artery for global energy flows, carrying roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply, making any disruption highly sensitive for markets. Analysts note that even limited signs of resumed transit can trigger profit-taking and price corrections, though underlying risks remain elevated due to ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Despite the pullback, market watchers caution that oil prices are likely to remain volatile, with continued military activity and uncertainty around shipping security in the Gulf expected to drive short-term swings. The partial reopening of the route offers some relief, but the broader supply outlook remains fragile amid one of the most significant energy disruptions in recent years.
