Yusuf Haliru Binji: The Quiet Architect Behind BUA Cement’s Industrial Rise

In Nigeria’s industrial landscape, where ambition often speaks louder than delivery, Yusuf Haliru Binji has emerged as a leader defined by results. As Managing Director and CEO of BUA Cement Plc, Binji leads with precision, discipline, and a vision shaped as much by engineering logic as by market foresight.

He doesn’t dominate headlines. Instead, he builds capacity, systems, credibility, and value.

Engineering at the Core

With a background in chemical engineering from Ahmadu Bello University and postgraduate training at University College London, Binji began his career grounded in technical fundamentals. This analytical foundation would go on to shape his ascent through Nigeria’s cement industry from technical leadership roles at Cement Company of Northern Nigeria to executive responsibilities within the BUA Group.

His appointment as CEO of BUA Cement in 2019, following the merger of Obu Cement and CCNN, positioned him to execute one of the most ambitious growth strategies in the country’s manufacturing sector.

Strategic Expansion, Measured Execution

Under Binji’s stewardship, BUA Cement has undergone a deliberate and sustained expansion. The company’s production capacity has grown to 17 million metric tonnes per annum, bolstered by the commissioning of new lines in Obu and Sokoto, alongside strategic infrastructure like a 70MW gas power plant.

Even amid currency volatility and inflationary pressure, BUA Cement recorded revenue of over ₦460 billion in 2023, with market share climbing to 24%. More importantly, these numbers reflect not just scale but operational efficiency, long-term investment thinking, and margin discipline.

Building with Purpose

Binji’s leadership extends beyond profit and production. He has championed a culture of operational excellence, built talent pathways within the company, and directed investments into local community development through energy access, clean water infrastructure, and educational scholarships.

His approach to corporate social responsibility is consistent with his leadership style: understated, structured, and long-term in orientation.

Confidence from the Boardroom

In December 2024, BUA Cement’s Board renewed his contract for another five years, underscoring confidence in his ability to sustain the company’s performance and navigate an evolving industrial landscape. With additional executive education from Harvard Business School, INSEAD, and IMD, Binji remains well-positioned to align global business strategy with local execution.

A Model of Industrial Discipline

What distinguishes Yusuf Haliru Binji is his method. His leadership isn’t performative. It’s procedural, reliable, and grounded in deep knowledge of Nigeria’s economic terrain. At a time when infrastructure growth is central to national development, he offers a template for what modern industrial leadership can and arguably should look like: thoughtful, deliberate, and outcome-driven.
