Gavi and Africa CDC Partner to Expand Vaccine Manufacturing in Africa

In June 2024, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, launched the African Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator (AVMA), a financing instrument that will make up to $1.2 billion available over ten years to support the sustainable growth of Africa’s vaccine manufacturing capacity.

The AVMA aims to accelerate the expansion of commercially viable vaccine manufacturing in Africa by providing downstream incentives to manufacturers, helping offset initial development and production costs. This initiative is a collaborative effort between Gavi and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening regional autonomy in biopharmaceutical manufacturing.

The partnership’s vision includes producing up to 100 million doses of RNA-based vaccines annually, fostering local production, and enhancing the continent’s ability to respond to health emergencies. The AVMA also supports the development of end-to-end mRNA vaccine production platforms in Africa, marking a significant step towards vaccine self-sufficiency.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to increase Africa’s vaccine production from the current 2% to 60% by 2040, addressing the inequalities exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuring that vaccines are made by Africa, for Africa.
