French automobile manufacturers are returning to Nigeria through strategic partnerships with Dangote Group and other local firms to revive domestic vehicle production and boost local assembly capacity, according to Business Insider Africa.
Two key collaborations are underway that together aim to produce and sell about 44,000 vehicles annually. The first involves Dangote Peugeot Automobiles Nigeria (DPAN), a joint venture between Dangote and Stellantis (the parent company of Peugeot), which has relaunched local assembly operations in Kaduna. DPAN’s production includes models such as the Peugeot 301, 308, 3008, 5008, and 508.
The second partnership brings Renault together with Nigerian assembler Coscharis Group to co‑produce Renault‑branded vehicles, including the Logan, for the Nigerian market. Both collaborations were highlighted by the French Ambassador to Nigeria, Marc Fonbaustier, as part of a broader effort to gradually restore French automakers’ presence in Africa’s largest car market.
French brands once dominated Nigeria’s automotive sector but lost steam amid economic pressures and increased imports of cheaper foreign vehicles. These renewed partnerships reflect confidence in the long‑term potential of Nigeria’s auto industry and aim to strengthen local manufacturing and value‑chain development.
